About SIC

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) comprises eight member states (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri-Lanka) .The SAARC was established when its Charted was formally adopted on 8 December 1985.SAARC is a manifestation of the determination of the people of the South Asia to work together in a sprit of friendship, trust and understanding and to create an order based on mutual respect, equity and shared benefits.

External Relations

SAARC-UNCTAD Memorandum of Understanding on the Trade Analysis and Information System (TRAINS) was signed in February 1993. The global aim of TRAINS is to increase transparency in international trading conditions and thus facilitate trade. This was the first Agreement of cooperation to be signed by SAARC with an international organization

Economic Integration

SAARC has also initiated action on a series of practical measures to facilitate the process of economic integration. A group on customs cooperation was set up in 1996 and so far has held three meetings. It was inter-alia decided to harmonize HS lines and customs rules and regulations, simplify procedures for intra-regional exports; upgrade infra-structural facilities and provide training facilities. A customs action plan was drawn up in Islamabad in April 1997 and agreed by all member states.

The SAVE programmes comprise of regular TV and Radio Programmes which are being telecast/broadcast on the 1st and 15th of each month respectively in all SAARC member countries.
